The Collection Exhibition

OHARA Collection Highlight:

From the 19th Century to the Present

Ohara Museum of Art was founded in 1930 as Japan’s first privately-owned museum focusing on Western art. The original collection was built up in the early twentieth century through a collaboration between the industrialist and social entrepreneur Ohara Magosaburo and the Western-style painter Kojima Torajiro.

When the pair came up with the idea of presenting authentic Western art to the Japanese public, an “art museum”—a place holding works on permanent display—was something still unfamiliar in this country. Deeply aware of the significance of their initiative, we continue to protect and nurture the museum and expand our collection so visitors can freely experience art across a range of cultures now and into the future.

This collection exhibition presents a selection of paintings and sculptures from our collection, created in Japan and abroad from the nineteenth century onward. We hope you will take this opportunity to appreciate these outstanding works by modern artists—who brought about profound revolutions in the history of art—as well as by their contemporary successors, whose practices continue to expand its horizons.
